A warmly spiced apple filling topped with a buttery, golden oat crumble. Simple, comforting, and deeply satisfying — especially with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a pour of cream.

Ingredients

Serves4
  • 5 medium apples (Bramley, Granny Smith or any tart variety), peeled, cored and sliced
  • 2 tbsp white or brown sugar (for the filling)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 150g (1¼ cups) plain flour
  • 120g (¾ cup) rolled oats
  • 120g (½ cup) brown sugar
  • 100g (7 tbsp) cold butter, cubed
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon (for the topping)

1. Preheat your oven to 180°C / 350°F.

2. Peel, core and slice the apples into pieces roughly 5mm thick. Toss them in a baking dish with the lemon juice, 2 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon until well coated. Spread into an even layer.

3. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, salt and ½ tsp cinnamon. Add the cold cubed butter.

4. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles rough, clumpy crumbs — you want some larger pea-sized chunks for texture. Do not overwork it.

5. Scatter the crumble topping evenly over the apples, covering them completely.

6. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the topping is deep golden and the apple juices are bubbling up around the edges.

7. Leave to cool for at least 10 minutes before serving — the filling will thicken as it rests. Serve warm on its own, or with cream, custard or vanilla ice cream.
